The village of Gevrey-Chambertin is located in the Northern part of Côte de Nuits. The soil is chalky, with a good covering layer of clayey marl which gives the wines their strength and roundness. Lying on a gentle slope, the vineyards are planted between 240 and 280 meters above sea level (720 to 840 feet) for the Joseph Drouhin offering. By law, a Gevrey-Chambertin may only be a red wine made of 100% Pinot Noir, and classic food pairings would be Burgundy's famous dishes : beef bourguignon and coq au vin, and will also pair beautifully with grilled meats and fine French cheeses.

Look for aromas of black cherry, blackberry, subtle wood and licorice followed by more of the same in the mouth along with gentle spice, nutmeg and leather. The tannins are fresh and silky at first, becoming more velvety as the wine opens up. This is a classic Gevrey.

Quite a fragrant wine for this appellation, which majors in earthy power. Bold sour-cherry and blackberry fruit on the rather generous palate, a well crafted, solid base of tannins underling all the fruit. The two sides of the wine neatly interwoven on the positively firm finish. Drink or hold

There are abundant blueberry and blackberry aromas, with a very fine savoury element and great finesse. The texture is structured and firm, but not heavy, and the wine lingers gently on the palate. This lovely example of village-level Gevrey is made with purchased fruit, including some classed in premier cru (about one-third)

Velvety and enveloping, the 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a medium to full-bodied, ample and succulent wine evocative of wild berries, plums, sweet spices, raw cocoa and forest floor. It's the most charming and immediate of these communal reds. 89-91

A more evidently floral-suffused nose combines plenty of earth and anise hints with those of various ripe red and dark berries along with a sauvage character, all of which is trimmed in a discreet dollop of wood. The bright, energetic and utterly delicious medium weight flavors possess good delineation on youthfully austere and mildly rustic finale that exhibits excellent persistence. Solid quality here. *Burghound Outstanding!

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a very pure bouquet with dark cherries and blueberry, almost Chambolle-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very good weight, fine grip towards the structured finish. Very fine.
