This superb wine represents a whole new dimension for Carmenère, the long-lost grape variety that recently resurfaced in Chile after being presumed extinct in Bordeaux, its original home. Purple Angel, has been recognized as Chile's best Carmenère. Critics have called this wine a "wine from another planet". Elegant and super ripe on the nose, with aromas of red and black berries over a background of flower and chocolate notes. Being aged in new French oak barrels for 18 months adds aromas of dark coffee and toast which complement the typical fruity aromas of this variety. Well structured on the palate, with smooth, velvety full tannins. 92% Carmenère, 8% Petit Verdot.
Winemaker/Owner Aurelio Montes has been named "Winemaker of the Year" by Wine Spectator two separate years, and is considered one of the greatest winemakers ever from Chile. Montes and his partners run a great, quality-driven operation in both Chile and in Argentina at Kaiken, which we have visited. We have the utmost respect for this family and their team!

Consistently one of the best and most layered carmeneres from Chile and, indeed, the world. Intriguing Cuban cigar and roasted bay-leaf character to the blackcurrants, blackberries and exotic spices. Some sandalwood, black chocolate, cedar and baked red chili pepper, too. Full-bodied, creamy and voluptuous, but still fresh and juicy, with dried-leaf, dark-olive and finely ground cocoa-powder character. Dusty tannins and a long, refined finish. A blend of 92% carmenere from Apalta (46%) and Marchigue(46%) and 8% petit verdot from Apalta. Drink or hold.

Opens with elegant details of plumeria and wet stone that fold over onto the palate, where lively acidity drives the clove-accented red currant and raspberry flavors, adding touches of vanilla bean and bakers chocolate that persist and echo back the core flavors around fine tannins. Carmenere and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2028. 16,500 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.
