Caparzo was listed by Wine Spectator as one of Brunello di Montalcino's 'Cream of the Crop' producers. The estate is comprised of 475 acres, with 125 total acres planted to vineyards on all 5 sides of the hill of Montalcino, the only estate with this benefit. This gives owner Elizabetta Gnudi Angelini, with her winemaker Massimo Bracalente, access to all of the different terroirs of the appellation, from soil differences to unique microclimates to varying altitudes of vineyards. Serve with roasted meats, hearty pasta dishes, braised meats, rustic lamb courses and/or Italian cheeses and olives.
Caparzo’s Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is only produced in the finest vintages, from grapes selected personally by winemaker Massimo Bracalente. The grapes are in part from from vineyards located in the northern part of the Montalcino Appellation, at an elevation of 220 meters above sea level, and in part from vineyards south of Montalcino, at an elevation of 270 meters. In both cases the vineyards are on sandy stony south-southeast facing Pliocene terrains. The Riserva begins to show its best several years after bottling. Produced in limited quantities, the Riserva is destined to especially passionate, attentive wine lovers. A classic, complete Riserva able to awaken unique sensations in the most expert palates. The first Caparzo Riserva Brunello di Montalcino DOCG was produced in 1980. The wine has the capacity to age for up to 40 years.
Made of 100% handpicked Sangiovese and aged one year in French oak tonneaux (500 l.) and 2 years in French and Slovenian oak casks (30 Hl), followed by at least 6 months in bottle before release.
FIRST YEAR PRODUCED: 1980
The color is ruby, tending towards garnet with age. The nose is penetrating, ample, and very complex, with echoes of wild berry fruit. This wine has a dry, warm, solid, and harmonious palate, combining delicacy and austerity, and is persistent. Pair with roasts, grilled, braised meats, game, ripe cheeses.

Complex and ready to enjoy now, this red features cherry, plum, leather, iron and wild herb flavors. The vibrant acidity keeps this resonant and tangy, while an inherent spiciness lends distinction and allure. Shows fine balance and a lingering, savory aftertaste. Drink now through 2038.

The Caparzo 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is delicious with lots of pretty intensity, nicely balanced fruit, blackberry, spice, cedarwood and campfire ash. This is a delicately perfumed wine that offers more power and length than you might initially anticipate. That's the secret soul of the 2016 vintage-elegance and brawn wrapped tightly together in one package.

Cedar shavings, mentholated herbs, graphite, dried roses and cherries form a delicately pretty bouquet as the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva blossoms in the glass. Within, I'm finding masses of wild berries contrasted by a bump of sour citrus, and silky textures that soothe as hints of tobacco amass toward the close. This leaves the palate classically dry yet keeps the mouth watering, as residual acids and minerals mingle through the long, licorice-tinged finale.

Aromas of fragrant blue flowers mingle with perfumed berries and roasted coffee bean in this plush red. The supple palate reflects the nose, offering fleshy black cherry, star anise and espresso alongside velvety, fine-grained tannins. Drink through 2028.
