Pol Roger Champagne remains one of the few luxury Champagne firms which is still family-owned and managed. Established in Epernay in 1849, Robert Parker calls Pol Roger his favorite N.V., and Sir Winston Churchill was a lifelong devotee. Their Vintage Blanc de Blancs is one of the finest 100% Chardonnay Champagnes produced in the world, and only released in the finest of vintages. Made of 100% Chardonnay sourced exclusively from vineyards Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. This is a gem in the category.
For vinification, the must undergoes two débourbages (settlings), one at the press house immediately after pressing and the second, a débourbage à froid, in stainless steel tanks at 6°C over a 24 hour period. A slow cool fermentation with the temperature kept under 18°C takes place in stainless steel with each variety and each village kept separate. The wine undergoes a full malolactic-fermentation prior to final blending. Secondary fermentation takes place in bottle at 9°C in the deepest Pol Roger cellars (33 metres below street level) where the wine is kept until it undergoes remuage (riddling) by hand, a rarity in Champagne nowadays. The very fine and persistent mousse for which Pol Roger is renowned owes much to these deep, cool and damp cellars. Serve this beautiful Blanc de Blancs as an aperitif, or with fresh seafood, especially oysters or pan-seared scallops, caviar, sushi and sashimi, light cheeses, gourmet potato chips and more. We also enjoy good Champagne with all things fried, like Calamari (but hold the red sauce!). Fried shrimp, for example, are a perfect companion...

Pure Chardonnay given a rich treatment has resulted in a Champagne that is now mature. The wine is ripe, its mineral edge fully integrated into the white fruit flavors. It is well ready for drinking.

Sleek and minerally, this elegant Champagne is crisply lacy in texture, with notes of Asian pear, lemon preserves, salted almond and white blossoms that are lightly honeyed and juicy throughout. Shows good drive on the firm, lingering finish. Drink now through 2034. 150 cases imported.

After the pillowy, chiseled 2013, Pol Roger's 2015 Brut Blanc de Blancs is cut from richer, broader cloth. Offering up aromas of crisp golden orchard fruit, white flowers and subtle hints of warm biscuits, it's full-bodied, broad and vinous, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and a precise, chalky finish. In style, it's reminiscent of a somewhat more sun-kissed version of the 2012 rendition.

The 2015 Blanc de Blancs marries textural intensity with a good deal of freshness. White pepper, dried herbs, chalk, mint and citrus make a strong opening impression. I especially like the energy and tension here, but there's plenty of depth, too. I would give the 2015 a year or two in bottle, maybe more, as it is quite reticent in the early going. It, too, is seriously impressive for the year. Disgorged: July 2021. Dosage is 7 grams per liter.
