Domaine Marquis d’Angerville is one of Burgundy's most sought after estates, and perfectly exemplifies the identity of Volnay. D'Angerville's list of holdings touches all of the village’s great terroirs, including one of the most picturesque vineyards in Volnay, the monopole of the estate, Clos des Ducs. The domaine started bottling its own production in the 1920s after the current Marquis’ grandfather, Sem d’Angerville, challenged the blending methods of the negociants’ and then began bottling his own wines instead of selling them his grapes. D'Angerville was one of the first Burgundy domains to do this, making history and encouraging the future of the region at the same time. Today the estate is led by Guillaume d’Angerville, farmed immaculately, and is producing some of the best wines in the entire Cote d’Or.
This Premier Cru Volnay is a blend of two famed 1er Cru vineyards in Volnay : Les Pitures and Mitans.

A blend of equal parts Pitures and Mitans, d'Angerville's 2020 Volnay 1er Cru bursts with aromas of cherries, raspberries and plums mingled with rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and precise, with lively acids and a long, elegantly chalky finish, it will offer a broad drinking window. "We chose balance over so-called phenolic maturity," Guillaume d'Angerville declared as we began our tasting of his 2020s; and the vintage that on paper was the most extreme of the 2020-2019-2018 trio has in fact delivered the most fine-boned, pretty wines of them all. Perfumed, vibrant and beautifully balanced, this is a compellingly delicate, precise portfolio that comes warmly recommended. 91-93

This too is super-fresh with its expressive and slightly more elegant nose of red berry coulis, discreet spice and more evident floral wisps. The delicious, intense and detailed middle weight flavors brim with minerality while the mouthfeel is a combination of muscle and refinement while flashing even more evident minerality on the impressively long and mineral-driven finish. This needs to develop better depth but if given a chance over the next 5 to 8 years, that should reasonably occur. *Burghound Outstanding!* 90-93

Has a marvellous richness and a pronounced floral character. The wine is not lacking in weight, and there is a lovely sweet character that the French call sucrosité - not jammy but ripe, supple and accessible. This village Volnay comes from two parcels that total not quite a half-hectare, split between Les Grands Champs and Les Pluchots (the latter has just been replanted in 2018). To this is added the young vines from the premiers crus until they reach eight years of age.

The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru is a ususal blend of Mitans and Les Pitures. It has quite a precocious bouquet with kirsch, red cherries and blood orange that conveys a sense of playfulness. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, a little Pommard-like in terms of structure towards the finish, though it does not possess the sustain of the Premier Crus on the aftertaste. Still, this will age well in bottle. 90-92
