#4 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2022 : Château Talbot owes its name to John Talbot, the English general and governor of the province of Guyenne who was defeated at the historic Battle of Castillon in 1453, marking the end of the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Talbot is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc having been included in Napoleon III's 1855 classification as one of only 10 fourth-growth estates (Quatrièmes Crus). Ideally situated on the banks of the estuary of the Gironde on hilltops of limestone and alluvial gravel carried by the Dordogne River from the Massif Central and from the Pyrénées by the Garonne, Château Talbot’s terroir is exceptional. With 250 acres of vineyards, the estate has one of the largest footprints in the Medoc. In addition, Talbot’s vines enjoy the highest elevation of all the Saint-Julien appellations and are just down the road from second-growth powerhouses Château Léoville-Las Cases, Château Léoville Barton and Château Léoville Poyferré.

The 2019 harvest was Jean-Michel Laporte’s second vintage as general manager of Château Talbot. Previously, he was director of Chateau la Conseillante in Pomerol. One of the primary changes he made in the vineyard is removing leaves earlier than before (mid-June instead of July), allowing more maturity and aeration, which protects the grape bunches from disease. Vinification adjustments include more pump-overs at the very beginning and fewer at the end as well as earlier extraction, which he feels avoids dryness and astringency. Lastly, he increased the proportion of new oak slightly, from 50 percent to 60 percent, giving the wine a richer, more sumptuous feel without an overly oaky flavor. This 2019 will drink best from 2025-2040 especially with a 30-60 minute decant in its youth. Only 1167 cases imported.

Blend: 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot

Barrel Sample. A rich, spicy and smoky wine, this has generous tannins to balance the blackberry fruit flavors. The structure is already impressive, showing ripeness as well as density, which is promising for plenty of aging. 94-96 Points.

Well-built and rather refined for the vintage, with a deep well of red and black currant paste and plum reduction flavors supported by a deeply inlaid iron note, all of which run the length of the wine. Offers subtle savory, tobacco and singed cedar notes that add range, with a savory echo that leaves a mouthwatering feel in the end. Built to cellar. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040. 23,333 cases made, 1,167 cases imported.

The 2019 Talbot is performing well, opening in the glass with aromas of earthy cassis, plums, burning embers and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with powdery tannins, lively acids and a savory finish, it's Jean-Michel Laporte's second vintage at this sleeping giant of Saint-Julien. This will be an estate to watch closely going forward.

The 2019 Château Talbot is straight-up impressive, sporting a dense purple hue as well as a powerful nose of cassis, scorched earth, smoked tobacco, and spicy wood. Rich, black-fruited, medium to full-bodied, and structured, it's a rock-solid, balanced Saint-Julien that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and age for 15-20 years.
