Made by Michael Mondavi, this classic Napa Cab is a blend of Rutherford, Oakville, Stags Leap, Atlas Peak and Wooden Valley fruit, which allows the winery to take advantage of both the volcanic hillside soils and the deeper alluvial soils of the valley floor. The fruit is hand harvested, and the winemaker uses extended juice to skin contact to marry rich flavor with good structure. Malolactic fermentation, in barrel, combined with 18 months aging in French oak barrels further concentrates the flavors and adds nuances of vanilla and toffee. Typically made of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petite Sirah, 4% Merlot, 3% Syrah and 3% Petit Verdot. look for black cherry, dark plum, cassis and sweet mocha flavors in a sleek, mouth-filling style. Formerly only available in restaurants, this is an incredible value.
In his blog, Eric Asimov of the New York Times recommended Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon, identifying it as 'one of a dozen American treasures, great wines under $20.' Serve this Cab with grilled steaks or burgers alongside baked potatoes stuffed with sour cream, cheese and chives.

This is a versatile take on Cabernet that is sufficiently soft to prove enjoyable for sipping before dinner, with a bit of sweetness layered atop the fruit's natural ripeness; however; there's enough flavor - namely blackberry and Bing cherry - and tanning backbone here to power through the charring on a steak as well. Its multifaceted character will manage to appeal to almost everyone - and that's no small feat.
