Established in 1985, Cloudy Bay Vineyards is situated in the Wairau Valley in Marlborough at the northern end of New Zealand’s South Island. This unique and cool wine region enjoys a maritime climate with the longest hours of sunshine of any place in New Zealand. Cloudy Bay has estate vineyards located at prime sites within the Wairau Valley, and long-term supply agreements with five Wairau Valley growers. The main varieties grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir with lesser quantities of Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris. Cloudy Bay wines are exported to over 30 markets, the principal ones being Australia, United Kingdom, USA, Europe and Japan. Cloudy Bay believes that the future success of specialist wineries lies in the production of high quality wines from varieties best suited to specific regions. At Cloudy Bay emphasis is placed on individual fruit character and the development of a consistent estate wine style.
Look for lifted aromas of ripe stone fruits juicy citrus, grass and lychee notes. The palate is fine yet succulent, with zesty citrus flavours and fresh acidity. There is an appealing plushness about this wine especially as it leads into a lingering and characteristically crisp finish. Serve with white fishes, cold seafood appetizers, goat's milk cheeses and green salads.Wine Spectator

It must be difficult being Cloudy Bay, because fame brings extra scrutiny and the questions, "Does this brand offer value for money in the context of the wider region?" In 2023, the Sauvignon Blanc silences its critics. Its vineyard may be much larger than it once was, but it delivers - dry, clean and elegant, with classic characteristics and the bonus of welcome structure on the finish. It may not be the most flamboyant on the nose, focusing more on the herbal rather than tropical spectrum (whether that's elderflower, gooseberry or classic passion fruit), but that seems to be a function of the vintage. The 2023 is long, fragrant and exactly what you want from Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, but with an extra layer of class.
