The 2021 Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva is an intense ruby red color. Expressive on the nose with fresh red fruit and floral notes. The rich bouquet is accented by sweet notes of white chocolate and spice. The palate is smooth and supple with elegant flavors with vibrant tannins and a persistent finish.
The ancient Antinori family is one of the oldest and most respected wine families in the world. The Antinori clan has lived in Florence since the early 13th century when they moved there from Calenzano, a small town between Florence and Prato. The merchant family was registered with the Guild of Silk Weavers in 1285 and later with the Guild of Bankers, thanks also to the branches that opened in Bruges and Lyons, and the growing network of business in Europe. They were also wine producers and merchants, and it was this business that became prevalent over time: Giovanni di Piero Antinori registered with the Guild of Winemakers in 1385. Production and sales of wine became increasingly important for the family and by the 16th century they were known to various clients outside Italy. The Marchese Antinori Riserva is made of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from 100% de-stemmed estate-grown fruit, and is only produced in the best vintages. Pair with fresh pasta dishes in tomato sauces, roasted meats, fine cheeses, olives and breads. This is one of the Antinori family’s most historic labels, and since the 2011 vintage Marchese Antinori has been producing it with grapes exclusively from the Tignanello vineyard.
'Antinori seems to do everything well these days, from churning out millions of bottles of supermarket wines all the way to turning out superb versions of their many flagship bottlings. This is another impressive set of new releases with a number of highlights. Over the years oenologist Renzo Cotarella has moved away from the super-late harvests of the late 1990s/early 2000s in favor of picking slightly earlier, a decision that has paid off handsomely, especially over the last few years.' The 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori, all from the Tignanello estate, is packed with black cherry, spice, new leather, licorice and dried flowers. A dollop of Merlot adds plush contours, but this is a pretty pushed style, that works well here. Ideally, though, it would be nice to see more Sangiovese and Tignanello character. This wine sees its fruit sourced from multiple villages: San Casciano, Gaiole, Castellina and Greve. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Villa Antinori is not married to a specific subzone of the appellation because it seeks to embrace a house style rather than a vineyard identity. Aged in tonneaux with some barrique, the wine is rich and lasting but not large. In fact, it remains elegant on the palate with fine tannins and good fruit tension with cherry and blue flowers.
